After the funeral

Ash placement and columbarium after a Taoist funeral

What happens after the cremation, from collecting the ashes to the columbarium.

Home  ›  Guides  ›  After the funeral

After the final rites and the cremation, one gentle step remains: laying your loved one to rest. Families often have questions about what happens to the ashes and where they are placed.

Collecting the ashes

A day or two after the cremation at Mandai, the ashes are collected. This is usually done by the family with the funeral director, and a short rite may accompany it. Ash collection is included in our package.

Choosing a resting place

The ashes are most commonly placed in a columbarium niche, at a government columbarium such as Mandai, or at a temple or private columbarium. Some families choose sea burial or inland ash scattering instead. There is no single right choice; it is a tender family decision.

Later rites and the 49 days

In the Taoist tradition, further rites may follow after the funeral, such as prayers on significant days. The 49 day period holds particular meaning in Chinese custom. We can advise on and help arrange these later observances so nothing is missed.

When the time comes for this final step, we walk beside you, so it is done with the same care as the rest of the journey.
