Cantonese Taoist funerals carry their own customs, music and cadence. A well-known part of the Cantonese tradition is the breaking of hell's gate (破地獄, po dei juk), a ritual performed by the Taoist priest to release the soul from the underworld and help it pass on. The rites are conducted across the days of the wake, which commonly runs three, five or seven days.
The priests lead the chanting and the merit rituals, and joss paper and paper effigies are prepared and burned so the departed is provided for in the next life. The altar, the offerings and the order of the ceremony follow the Cantonese custom, and we arrange everything to your family's practice.
